Art Design|Gem Clock Necklace

Merging engineering and art has always been my dream. Using my engineering experience in manufacturing, I designed a necklace in SOLIDWORKS using old Seiko mechanical watch movements, gemstones, Ag925 silver necklace and SLA and SLM 3D printed parts

A brief description
This is my work of art, and I do all the design by myself

Element Collection

I found a Seiko women’s watch in the second-hand market. Although the appearance is old, the movement is still exquisite and intact. The idea of using the movement of this watch to make a necklace was born

I also bought a cheap but good quality Ag925 silver chain in the second-hand market and plan to use it as a necklace.

CAD and Processing

I first took out the watch movement and came up with a good-looking configuration in my mind. I use my best CAD software SOLIDWORKS to design the shape of the artwork

Seiko watch movements

In order to protect the precise mechanical structure of the movement, I plan to use high-transparency SLA resin to make the shell, and use aluminum alloy SLM to make the overall frame and the parts connected to the Ag925 chain. Prepare to make a round transparent resin gem plate and install it on the pointer shaft of the movement, engrave the gem groove on the surface of the part, and then insert the gem. When the movement is wound up, the main shaft will rotate in a cycle of 12 hours, driving the gem plate to rotate

The gemstones on the gemstone plate, in clockwise order starting from the largest on the left, are

  • 6x8mm Turquoise Opal - Symbol of the Earth. The blue-green opal stone symbolizes tranquility and peace, while the earth represents the home we live in, the harmony and balance of nature.

  • 3.0mm round emerald - symbolizes Saturn. Emeralds symbolize health and restoration, while Saturn is considered the planet of responsibility, order and structure.

  • 2.0mm Vivid Pink Opal - Symbol of Venus. Vibrant pink opal symbolizes love and affection, while Venus is the name of the goddess who was endowed with beauty and love, representing love, beauty and tender emotions.

  • 1.5mm spinel sapphire - symbolizes Mercury. Sapphire symbolizes wisdom and truth, while Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, represents knowledge, communication and insight.

  • 2.5mm Garnet - Symbolizes Mars. Garnet represents passion, vitality and strength, and Mars is also considered the planet of enthusiasm and adventurous spirit.

  • 3.0mm Olive Yellow Zircon - Symbol of Jupiter. Olive-yellow zircon symbolizes happiness and wealth, while Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system, represents prosperity, success and luck.

Gem plate design and preliminary assembly

Due to the high cost of metal 3D printing, the error tolerance rate is low. I first printed the resin frame to test the fit

Resin frame for testing fit

Apparently there was a big problem with where the frame connects to the chain, this was fixed in later versions of the metal parts
